Autism in the Park event to bring support

AUTISM Awareness Month will be front-and-centre in the South Burnett on Saturday.

The South Burnett Autism Support Group will host an education day in the park.

Group member Jenny Lutz organised the Autism in the Park event at Memorial Park in Kingaroy along with Tracey Aberele.

Mrs Lutz said in the past the group had organised trivia nights and other bigger events, but they did not have enough time this year so organised the fun day instead.

"We decided to do something completely different," Mrs Lutz said.

"We thought, why don't we have an awareness day in the park?

"Now that everything is organised we hope it doesn't rain on us."

Mrs Lutz said there would be a free sausage sizzle, a jumping castle, face painting, soft drinks for sale and an ice cream van at the event.

There will also be a number of activities and displays set up to educate people about autism.

"We will have sensory boards to teach people what its like to have autism, as kids are really sensitive to certain things, things that don't bother you which bother them," she said.

"There will be audio visual displays and smelling stations.

"Plenty of us will be there for people to talk to as well if they have any questions."

Mrs Lutz said the event was open to the public and she encouraged everyone to come down and learn about autism, as it could help reduce the stigma around the condition.

"That way we'll be able to show people what it's like to have things like autism or Asperger's," she said.

"It's important to meet people face to face so they can ask questions a lot more freely.

"It's a time to sit down and talk to you about autism and for you to sort of experience what it would be like."

The Autism in the Park event begins at 10am and runs until 2pm on Saturday April 8 at Memorial Park, Kingaroy.

The South Burnett Autism Support Group was formed in 1995 and has run continuously since then.
