Big-name sport heroes coming for dinner

THREE big-name sport stars are heading to Kingaroy in July to take part in a major Cancer Council fundraiser.

Former Wallabies captain Andrew Slack, former Broncos star Petero Civoniceva and Olympic softballer Joyce Lester will make the trek to Kingaroy for the South Burnett Relay for Life Dinner with the Captains.

South Burnett Relay for Life patron Carl Rackemann said he was excited about the speakers.

"This year we've got two new sports (represented), in rugby union and softball,” he said

"We have another new situation with a captain who wasn't a captain of Australia.

"Their CVs are impressive.”

Mr Rackemann said Mr Slack had helped out the South Burnett Relay for Life in the past.

"Andrew Slack, who used to be head of sport at Channel 9, also provided us DVD highlight packages at previous dinners,” he said.

"I'd call him up saying we need footage of Libby Trickett or something and he'd put this highlights package together.”

Mr Rackemann said the fight against cancer was personal for one of the captains.

"Slacky lost his son to cancer,” he said.

"He himself has had a cancer issue, as has his wife Caroline.

"I don't know how much cancer one family has got to have - that has got to be enough for the Slack family.”

Mr Rackemann said it was also good to have his close friend, softball Olympian Joyce Lester, as a speaker, especially considering how important the sport used to be to the Burnett.

"Softball was a big sport here in the South Burnett, it was huge,” he said.

"Almost every school had state representative softball players.”

He said it was also good to have former Broncos player and Fiji captain Petero Civoniceva in the line-up.

The 2017 Dinner with the Captains will take place at Kingaroy Town Hall on July 22. Tickets will be available from Monday from Crow FM.
