PROSTON SHOW: Big wins for first time cattle competitors

FIRST time exhibitors Oakwood Limousins won Supreme Beast the Proston in what was a hotly contested competition.

Oakwood owners Paul and Kelli Forman won prize with heifer Native Cutt and her bull calf.

"The cow were showing was a junior heifer over the past two years," Mr Forman said.

"This was just a warm up for Beef 2018 and she has a really exciting bull calf."

The young beast is bred from semen imported from a out-crossed Canadian Bull that Oakwood and Five Star Limousins have exclusive Australian rights to.

"His breeding lines are not very common in Australia and were always looking for a new genetics to cross into our herd. The advantage is we can offer something different," Mr Forman said.

Glen Perrett from Glenrae Pastoral Company, Bowenfels Angus placed second in the Supreme Beast with Bowenfels Special Edition. The Evans Family from Jen-Daviews placed third with Mr Pinnacle.

Meanwhile, the Plowman Family took out the top prize in the Junior Bull ring with Ruby Ridge Marvellous.

Like the folks from Oakwood, Karen Plowman has her eyes on Beef 2018.

"We're doing all the South Burnett shows and working our way towards Rockhampton in May for Beef Week," she said.

"We'll take a bull, a couple of cows and some heifers, so we'll have small team."

This was the third show of the year for the stud. They were at Cooyar and Bell where they picked up a handful of awards including Champion and Grand Champion.

On the farm they are running an AI program crossing Australian and imported genetics.

"We're slowly building out herd," Mrs Plowman.

"We sell out bulls each year and we'll have about six or seven bulls for sale this year. We're really happy with the calves we have on ground, the bulls that we are using a very even and that was proved last weekend with the breeders group."
