Motorist left hanging off bridge after car crash
LATEST: A MAN has escaped serious injury after a crash left him trapped in his car hanging off the edge of a bridge in what police described as a very "precarious situation".
The motorist, aged in his 70s, swerved off the Brisbane Valley Hwy near Fernvale at about 2.30pm yesterday.
Four police crews, including three general duties and one road policing unit, were called to the scene of the single vehicle crash which saw the man's car teetering on the edge of Sandy Creek Bridge at Wanora.
Police freed the man from the blue Subaru Impreza hatch while part of the vehicle was left clinging to the edge of the bridge.
The car then fell off the bridge into the creek below and was completely destroyed.
The emergency services Rescue 500 helicopter arrived just before 4pm and airlifted the driver to hospital.
A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman said the man escaped the dramatic crash with non-life-threatening injuries.
"He was transported to the Royal Brisbane Hospital in a stable condition," the spokesman said.
"The man sustained a fractured arm and minor head injuries."
The highway was temporarily closed off causing delays yesterday afternoon before both lanes were reopened at 5pm.
Police said a crane would be needed to remove what was left of the man's Subaru from underneath the bridge.
WEDNESDAY 4.10PM: The male driver who was trapped in his car hanging off the edge of Sandy Creek Bridge in Wanora is being flown out of the crash site by an emergency services helicopter after police successfully removed him from the vehicle.
Police say the man in his 70s sustained a fractured arm and a minor head injury but his injuries are not life threatening.
He was transported to the Royal Brisbane Hospital in a stable condition.
UPDATE 4PM: THE Rescue 500 chopper has arrived at the scene of a crash just south of Fernvale.
A man aged in his 70s has crashed his car, which was left hanging off the edge of Sandy Creek Bridge.
Police say one lane of the Brisbane Valley Hwy has remained open at the scene of the crash, however both lanes will be temporarily closed while the chopper lands.
Police say the man has a fractured arm but that his injuries are not believed to be life threatening.
UPDATE 3.38PM: The driver, believed to be aged in his 70s, is still trapped in his car hanging over Sandy Creek Bridge.
Police are still attempting to free the man from his blue Subaru Impreza hatch.
The Queensland Emergency Services Rescue 500 helicopter is on route to the crash scene and is expected to arrive by 4pm.
EARLIER: A MOTORIST is trapped in a vehicle which is hanging off the edge of Sandy Creek Bridge on the Brisbane Valley Highway about 10 minutes south of Fernvale.
The single-vehicle crash occurred at about 2.30pm this afternoon when the man drove off the bridge.
Four police crews have been dispatched to assist the man who they described as being in a very "precarious situation".
Police have closed off the Ipswich-bound lane with one lane of traffic still open.
Drivers have been advised to expect delays.
