Byron braves the shave for a worthy cause
MURGON Mitre 10 employee Byron Begeda was quietly working away one day when a woman came in to the store with a hair-razing idea.
That woman was local hairdresser Alicia Pidgeon from Alicia's Hair and Beauty, and her idea was to shave Byron's extraordinary beard.
"Alicia just happened to catch me in the shop about three or four weeks ago.
"She said, 'your beard is great, let me cut it'.
Byron, 19, is very proud of his facial creation and originally wasn't too interested in taking Alicia up on her suggestion.
"I said if we raise enough money we'll cut it.
As part of this year's annual World's Greatest Shave, Byron is attempting to raise significant funds for the Leukaemia Foundation.
"The goal is $700 and I'll colour the beard and cut it,” he said.
"And if we hit $1500 I have agreed to take all the hair off my head as well.”
The thought of losing his locks has left young Byron quite apprehensive.
"It's the beard I am most worried about,” he said.
"It took time to get this lumberjack beard where I wanted it.
"Luckily it grows back very fast and I don't have a girlfriend.”
If he can raise the $1500, Byron will have his beard and hair all shaved off out the front of Mark Smith's Menswear on March 15 from 11am.
