Candidates united against coal mine
WHILE the major political parties might be squabbling about the Adani coal mine they appear to be united against another one closer to home.
All candidates for the seat of Nanango at the stateelection have voiced their opposition to the proposed Moreton Resources Kingaroy coal mine.
MP Deb Frecklington said it was a "ludicrous” idea and accused Moreton Resources of "scaremongering” locals.
One Nation candidate Douglas Grant and Labor candidate Ben Rankin said the proposal was too close to town.
The Greens also oppose the mine.
Kingaroy Concerned Citizens Group spokesman John Dalton said he was not surprised the candidates opposed themine.
"It's of some comfort to us that hopefully whoever is elected is of the same opinion we are of the merits of this mine,” MrDalton said.
He said there were larger questions politicians had to answer.
"Do they agree there should be some sort of preliminary assessment to stop mines like this going ahead in the first instance,” he said.
"We should never have a coal mine within 10km of a town and not in a town's water supply.”
