Cane group holds growers' day

ORGANISERS of this year's Australian Society of Sugar Cane Technologists conference have announced a growers' day to attract interest from cane growers.

This year's conference is being held in Townsville from April 16-18, with Wednesday April 17 Growers' Day.

ASSCT Agricultural president Greg Shannon said although the agricultural component of the conference always comprised several presentations relevant to cane growers, grower attendance had dwindled in recent years.

"The organising committee is keen to boost grower attendance at this year's event," Mr Shannon said.

"A range of agricultural papers directly applicable to cane growers will be presented on Growers' Day. It is important growers are aware of the latest research and technology happening within their industry to ensure they maintain a competitive edge.

"Topics covered in this year's papers include exotic pest management, research on cane diseases such as chlorotic streak and pachymetra, and nutrient management."

Mr Shannon said the Growers' Day aimed to recognise the important contribution cane growers made to the industry and provide an opportunity for them to hear about leading-edge research and development.
