Community to walk as one against cancer

CANCER survivors, carers, supporters and the wider South Burnett community will come together this weekend to fight back against cancer at South Burnett Relay For Life.

400 registered participants across 32 teams will descend on the Kingaroy Showgrounds this Saturday for the annual Relay For Life event.

Kicking off at 3pm on Saturday, October 13, the event will be jam-packed full of fun and festivities before ending at 9am on Sunday, October 14.

Thanks in large part to the huge efforts of the Relay for Life committee and their patron Carl Rackemann, the event has already raised $83,000 this year.

Chair of South Burnett Relay For Life, Rowena Dionysius is hoping to reach the $100,000 mark by the time the event has concluded at 9am Sunday morning.

As well as each team spending 18 hours overnight in a relay-style walk or run they will have the opportunity to do onsite fundraising.

"Previous years we have had teams that did little games or nail painting, or guess how may lollies in the jar, one team even did foot massages to raise money," she said.

"I hope someone does that again this year."

To commence proceedings on Saturday, South Burnett Relay For Life patron Carl Rackemann will read the ode and South Burnett Regional Council mayor Keith Campbell will officially open the event.

Cancer Council Queensland CEO Chris McMillan extended a special invite to the community to attend the 2018 South Burnett Relay For Life.

"Everyone is welcome at Relay, no matter your age or ability and we will be taking registrations on the day," she said.

"Our volunteer committee have plenty of entertainment planned for the whole family, as well as inspirational ceremonies including the evening candlelight ceremony where we light up the darkness in memory of those we have lost."

To register a team, volunteer or find out more, go to the Relay For Life website or phone the Fundraising Hotline 1300 65 65 85.

On the day registration is $40 per person and includes event entry, a shirt, and breakfast.
