Cop shot in face unveils statue honoring war animals
A NEW statue honoring animals who have served in war was unveiled yesterday at Palm Beach Parklands.
Minister Jann Stuckey was at the unveiling with Sergeant Gary Hamrey, a veteran police dog handler who was shot on duty in late September on the Gold Coast.
While tracking two suspects with his dog Biff after a hold up, Sgt Hamrey was shot in the face by one of the suspects.
Sgt Hamrey still had bandages covering his injury on the left side of his face but was in good spirits and talked about his return to duty.
"It has been a nice quiet week, which is good I'm starting to feel a lot better," Sgt Hamrey said.
"I certainly want to come back to the squad and continue my work as a dog handler."
The statue of the German shepherd highlights the large contribution dogs have made in war over the past century.
