Ricki-Lee Coulter battles through injury for Dancing debut

WHEN it comes to the softer side of ballroom dancing, Ricki-Lee Coulter feels right at home.

The singer can't wait to dress up on Dancing With The Stars.

"I'm from the Gold Coast, so I love a bit of sparkle," Coulter told APN.

"I'm very much at home with feathers and sequins and shiny things."

But the primping and finessing comes after weeks of slogging it out in the rehearsal studio, where she has already suffered an injury.

"I'm fit; I run and I go to the gym... but you're using your muscles in different ways than I'm used to," she said.

"I put my hip out and had to have some really intense physio. I couldn't walk for a few days.

"I'm a competitive person, so I don't want to have to bow out because of an injury... it would be unfinished business."

She is one of 12 new Aussie celebrities competing on the reality dancing show for charity.

Coulter doesn't believe her singing background will give her any sort of advantage.

"If anything I've got to unlearn all of the things I already know and the habits I already have with dance," she said.

"There are people in this world who have rhythm and people who don't. I'm fortunate I do have rhythm."

One celebrity who might struggle on the rhythm front, said Coulter, is swimmer Eamon Sullivan.

"I don't want to start a war of words here, but he's got an interesting dance style," she said.

"He makes me laugh so much, but the funniest part is he doesn't intentionally try to make you laugh."

The 28-year-old is full of praise for her professional dance partner Jarryd Byrne, who made his DWTS debut last year when he was partnered with another beauty, former Miss Universe Australia Jesinta Campbell.

"His patience with me blows me away every day," she said.

"I couldn't do what he does. I couldn't teach somebody how to sing. There are so many technical aspects to this ballroom dancing you don't even know about because they make it look so effortless."

Dancing With The Stars premieres on Tuesday at 7.30pm on Channel 7.
