Man jailed after drunkenly stealing tree-lopping truck

STEALING a tree lopping truck and crashing it into a light pole has earned a 48-year-old Pialba man nine months in prison.

Chad Francis McDonald, who had been in custody since the incident, pleaded guilty to charges of driving while disqualified, common assault, dangerous operation of a vehicle while intoxicated and stealing a vehicle.

The incident happened on February 22.

The owner of the truck, Glen Farrance, told the Chronicle how he had witnessed "some joker climbing into the truck", which was parked on the corner of Macks Rd and the Esplanade.

When he realised it wasn't a mate, Mr Farrance then chased the vehicle along the Esplanade.

Eventually he climbed into the passenger side of the truck where he had a scuffle with McDonald before the vehicle hit the light pole.

McDonald was then wrestled from the truck by Mr Farrance, who held onto him with the help of two other people until police arrived. At the time, a shaken Mr Farrance said the man "didn't care" what he was doing.

Taking into account time served, McDonald was given a parole release date of July 21.

In addition to the prison sentence, Mr McDonald was also disqualified from driving for two years.
