Family who create together, do business together
MOTHER and daughter duo Kate and Lil Elford have taken their close relationship to the next level by going into business together to create and sell what they love.
Kate Elford, a Prep teacher from Nanango, said she saw a gap in the market in the South Burnett for homemade clay earrings.
“I just love being creative and I found myself always buying earrings and I thought, ‘hey I could do that’,” Ms Elford said.
“Then I fell in love with clay and that’s what I love to use to make my earrings.
“I used to do embroidery and quilting, so I supposed I’ve always been pretty creative.”
Ms Elford said creativity definitely ran in her family.
“I get it from my mum and my nana,” she said.
“Getting my daughter on board was the best thing I did.
“It’s our little project and it’s also been a great bonding experience.”
Ms Elford and her daughter Lil make their clay earrings at home to sell, and also sell scrunchies made by Kate’s mum.
“We believe in keeping it in the family and local,” Ms Elford said.
“So we go along to all of the local South Burnett markets and buy all of our products locally.
“We’re about getting out there in the community and spending money in the local economy — it’s just good for the region.”
The girls have created a Christmas range, and also take orders for custom pieces.
“So if you have a specific idea or an event we do take custom made orders,” Ms Elford said.
“As long as you have a vague idea of what you’re after, I’m sure we can figure something out,” Ms Elford said.
“We actually just did an order of custom-made earrings for a bridal party in the South Burnett. That was a really special order.”
Kate and Lil Clay Designs can be found on Facebook and at most South Burnett markets.
