Fatalities prompt police crackdown

A SPECIFIC operation targeting driver behaviour is in place across the Dalby and Burnett region as a direct response to the fatalities on the road in recent weeks.

Senior Sergeant David Tierney said as part of Operation Romeo Tropical, officers from the Road Policing Unit based in Brisbane were targeting life-endangering traffic offences and conducting random drug tests across the region.

"People have noticed the increased presence and hopefully they realise that if they are not going to heed our pleas to slow down, this will be the reaction,” he said.

The operation started on Friday, June 14, and is expected to run for three weeks from Millmerran to Chinchilla, Blackbuttt, Murgon and Jandowae.

Snr Sgt Tierney said officers were travelling from Brisbane each day to target traffic offences and others were doing 10-hour shifts and staying in the region targeting drug driving.

"When we run an operation like this every couple of months it makes people realise they are not only driving to protect their lives but the lives of others,” he said.
