FOR SALE: Sport store sure to create 'interest'
IF YOU'RE in the market for a unique business, this Murgon sports store with a difference is definitely worth a look.
Murgon's Struddys Sports on Lamb St is the go-to destination for all things sporting or recreational, but locals also go there for a different reason.
Struddys Sports is also the home of Murgon's Bendigo Bank.
Struddys Sports owner Leigh Dudgeon took over the store in June 2010 after a career in the mining sector.
"I was working in Blackwater on dozers, but I was sick of being away from home," he said.
Being the home of Murgon's Bendigo Bank gives locals an incentive to drop in.
"It is great having the bank in the store," he said.
"It brings people into the shop, but more than that, Bendigo Bank really looks after the town."
This is nothing new for the Murgon business community.
"If anyone is ever in strife, we always chip in and help out," Mr Dudgeon said.
"I noticed that even before I went into business here."
Like all small country towns, local residents are the biggest supporters of Struddys.
"Murgon is good to us, and Cherbourg as well. A lot of our customers come from Cherbourg," Mr Dudgeon said.
"I drum it into my kids to buy local.
"We've had people from Brisbane come in and say my shoes are cheaper than in Brisbane."
Mr Dudgeon, whose children work in both the sports store and the bank, said the new owners of the popular sports store would ideally be a family or a young couple.
"Maybe a family who is after a tree change," he said.
"If I can do it, anyone can."
Mr Dudgeon was remaining tight lipped about his plans after he sells.
"We may go into another business. Watch this space, as they say," he said.
