Gas company and council strike deal to upgrade airstrip

THE Surat Basin township of Miles has scored a massive upgrade of its Second World War-era airstrip, with the local council and a major gas company announcing a major infrastructure deal on Wednesday.

Australian Pacific LNG will take care of the construction work although the airport will continue to be owned by the Western Downs Council.

It will be upgraded to Civil Aviation Safety Authority standards, allowing landings at night and in poor weather.

APLNG chief executive Page Maxson said it would allow safer transport for its staff and contractors working nearby.

"When completed, the upgrade will also provide the community with a much improved asset," he said.

Western Downs Mayor Ray Brown said it would take vehicles off the road, saving the council money on maintenance.
It is expected to be finished within six months.
