Gayndah boy prepares to run on for Queensland in Origin
STATE of Origin fans in Gayndah will cheer on one of their own next week.
Chris Ostwald has been selected to play for the Queensland under-18 team taking on New South Wales for the Origin curtain raiser at Suncorp Stadium.
He got the phone call last Thursday and straight away called home to tell his parents the good news.
"I called Mum and Dad first, they were pretty excited about it," Ostwald said.
"It will be the first time I've played at Suncorp Stadium.
"I'm really looking forward to it. It should be a great experience.
"I reckon we will win it, and in the NRL too.
"Queensland will have it at home with the crowd behind them."
The 18-year-old is contracted with the Brisbane Broncos U20 squad, who make up 10 of the 17 players in the Queensland team.
Ostwald is yet to play in the U20s, but is judged to be one of the top 17 footballers in the state.
Broncos' general manager of football operations Andrew Gee said the recruitment staff had done a great job to find talent like Ostwald.
"We are certain to see some NRL players come out of this crop of young talent," he said.
Ostwald and the Queensland squad will go into training camp at the Gold Coast on Friday.
