Let 'em have one - ex-Maroon says NSW win good for Origin

QUEENSLAND'S State of Origin dominance is so unbreakable ex-Queensland enforcer Dan Stains wants the Maroons to gift NSW this year's series.

It is a remark bound to have the godfather of Queensland Origin, Dick "Tosser" Turner, rolling in his grave ahead of tomorrow's opener at Sydney's ANZ Stadium.

But Sunshine Coast-based Stains, who played four games for Queensland between 1989-90, believes the Blues suffering an eighth consecutive series loss could have a cataclysmic effect on the storied 33-year-old contest.

"For the sake of Origin, I wouldn't mind seeing them win one, just to breathe a bit of life more than anything into NSW," Stains said.

"They're (NSW supporters) too complacent at the best of times and it would be very ordinary if they turned away because of their team never winning.

"Look, that (gifting the Blues a series) might have to be the case."

Stains said Queensland again having the services of the world's best four players in the four key positions - fullback (Billy Slater), five-eighth (Johnathan Thurston), halfback (Cooper Cronk) and hooker (Cameron Smith) - meant NSW's best chance of a series victory was the Maroons self-sabotaging.

"I suppose NSW picked the best team they could, but at the end of the day Queensland's still got the best four players in key positions in the world," he said.

"And then they've got (Greg) Inglis and (Justin Hodges), probably the best centres in the world, and Inglis is probably the best player in the world at the moment.

"And they've got a hard-working pack.

"So the only thing that's going to beat Queensland is Queensland themselves, really."

Stains, a durable forward who played 135 games for Cronulla and 35 games for Balmain between 1987 and 1996, said people underestimated the powerfulness of experience - another area where Queensland had the edge over NSW.

"You can't buy the experience Queensland's got."
