Gofers heroics not enough for Stingers to avoid exit
THE Australian women's water polo team has bowed out of the world championships in Hungary after a 7-5 loss to reigning world and Olympic champion the United States in the quarter-finals.
Keesja Gofers scored four goals for the Stingers against the tournament favourite, but it wasn't enough for the world No.4-ranked Aussies, who will now face Italy in the playoff for fifth place on Wednesday night (9.30pm AEST).
"We are really disappointed. We came here as underdogs, but we never stop fighting," Gofers said.
"The USA came up as the better team, and I wish them good luck in the semi-finals."
"As a water polo player you can expect anything - bugs, rain or anything else. We had to deal with what comes our way, as the other team had. I shot four goals, but it would've been better to shoot two more.
The Australian men face reigning Olympic champion Serbia in the quarter-finals on Wednesday morning (4.30am AEST).
