Gory Halloween makeup you need to see to believe

A NORTH Burnett hairdresser who is studying to become a qualified makeup artist has been selected as a finalist in a prestigious Halloween makeup competition after turning her sister into a ‘Possessed Scarecrow’.

22-year-old Cassie Stephan, who has worked at The Fox and The Hare Salon in Monto for the past seven years, is currently enrolled with QC Makeup Academy, which organises an annual Halloween Makeup Contest.

Ms Stephan said it took her about three hours to transform her 17-year-old sister Hannah and another hour to stage the perfect photoshoot.

She borrowed her friend Kimberley Voss’ python, which is named BG (short for ‘Big Girl’ – she is nine feet long), for the photoshoot.

Kimberley and another friend, Tiffany Mason, were on hand to help with the shoot, because Ms Stephan was not “game enough” to get up close and personal with BG.

Ms Stephan said everyone loved the look she created and she was proud to represent Monto on the wider stage.

She was one of five finalists in the ‘Trick’ category.

More than 250 artists entered the competition.

Judge Nathan Johnson, QC’s New York-based executive makeup artist who has worked with a slew of celebrities, including Paula Abdul, Paul McCartney and Kevin Bacon, said Ms Stephan’s was a “beautiful submission”.

“Cassie’s work really captures the spirit of Halloween,” he said.

“The art direction and composition of this photo are superb.

“Small details like the maggots on the forehead, the textured skin, and the contact lenses put it over the top in the best of ways.”

He rated her entry 22 out of 25, suggesting that in his opinion the teeth could be smaller to enhance the realism of the look.

Ms Stephan lost out by a single point to the eventual winner Romane Castelnau.

However, the talented young artist remained optimistic.

“I’m so proud, (Romane) is a professional artist who owns his own studio,” she said.

The qualified hairdresser is finishing off her final few modules before she can add qualified makeup artist to her impressive resume.
