Group brings guest speakers to region for autism conference
THOSE interested in learning more about autism don't have to travel far to learn from knowledgeable professionals.
This is thanks to the South Burnett Autism Support Group which will hold an Every Day is a Puzzle on the Autism Spectrum conference at the Nanango State School hall.
The conference will feature guest speakers Lionel Evans, Nelle Francis and Simone Newitt who will talk about autism awareness, what happens in an autism-based meltdown, and strategies for parents and teachers of an autistic child.
The South Burnett Autism Support Group was created 24 years ago after organiser Jenny Lutz's son was diagnosed with the disorder.
Mrs Lutz said the group started with just seven families - now it has 80 families on the books, and many people across the region who support it.
Mrs Lutz said it was important to bring an event like this to the area.
"Families here don't often get the chance to travel to cities for autism awareness events, and being in a regional area, you don't get speakers out here often,” she said.
"Otherwise most events can start at $200 a ticket.
"We're very much subsidising the costs, bearing a lot of it ourselves to help bring a better understanding of autism to the region.”
The tickets to the event, which will run from 4-7pm on Saturday October 12, will cost $50 per adult and $20 per child, and will include meals. Tea and coffee will also be available.
There will also be private sessions available with the speakers, however bookings are running out quickly.
