Harris out to impress selectors with Shield bowling skills

BULLS quick Ryan Harris gave Australian selectors a timely nudge yesterday with a superb spell of bowling which threatened to turn the Sheffield Shield final on its head.

But another with sights on an Ashes berth - Tasmanian wicketkeeper-batsman Tim Paine - combined with James Faulkner for a century stand to lead the home side to a final-winning position at Blundstone Arena.

Paine and Faulkner put on 161 for the seventh wicket before the keeper mistimed a pull shot and was caught at midwicket for 87.

Needing only a draw to take the Shield crown, the Tigers bowled out the Bulls for 225 to give itself a first innings lead of 194.

But Harris claimed the wickets of Jordan Silk, Ricky Ponting, George Bailey and Jonathan Wells and with skipper James Hopes also removing Mark Cosgrove, the home side was at one stage 5-14 with a lead of just over 200.

Harris had taken 4-6, but Paine led the fightback with first Alex Doolan, who made 26, and then Faulkner.

At stumps, Tasmania was 7-240, a lead of 434, with Faulkner not out 83.
