How a small change can make a big difference for pig farmers
EDUCATING bacon lovers on the importance of supporting Australian farmers is a top priority for Australian Pork Limited at Kingaroy BaconFest this weekend.
This comes off the back of a recent survey of 3000 Australians which found 75 per cent of people didn't know most bacon in Australia was imported.
Australian Pork senior brand manager Julia Unwin said they had a big job ahead of themselves to educate consumers on how to support Australian farmers.
"We represent Australian pig farmers and they have been doing it really tough , in particular this region, with the drought, grain prices and they have been getting quite low prices for their pigs,” she said.
"We are here to raise awareness that 80 per cent of the ham and bacon in Australia is made with imported pork and how to choose ham and bacon that is Australian.”
Australian Pork Limited encourage customers to look for ham and bacon made from at least 90 per cent Australian ingredients to be certain they are supporting Australian farmers and enjoy the best local produce.
To make this easier at the supermarket all fresh pork, bacon and ham products in Australia have country of origin labelling.
The green and yellow kangaroo indicates produce has been manufactured in Australia, while the bar chart is a visual representation of the amount of Australian ingredients in the product.
"It is such an easy change to make, you just look for the country of origin label and you can support Aussie farmers in an easy way,” Ms Unwin said.
"It is something that most people eat and buy every week so it is a small change that makes a huge difference to Aussie farmers.”
