'It's a good move': Council to pay housing debt
COMMUNITY housing in Nanango will be transformed into rental units.
This comes after the South Burnett Regional Council agreed to take on an offer by the Department of Housing and Public Works during their general meeting on Wednesday.
This will allow a settlement of the contingent liability for the former community housing at 49 Alfred St, Nanango, known as the Brighthaven Units.
Mayor Keith Campbell said the council would pay the contingent liability of more than $215,000 for the Brighthaven Units.
"Once this amount of money is paid to community housing, that asset transfers to ownership of the South Burnett Regional Council," Cr Campbell said.
The council would then transform the former community housing into rental units.
"The popularity of these units for rent are always filled," he said.
Cr Gavin Jones said it was a good move by the council.
"This eliminates having to go to the State Government for permissions," he said.
"It's just another messy situation that's been cleaned up, it's a good move."
The ongoing occupancy of the Brighthaven Units will continue to generate income for the council as private rental accommodation.
The council has provided a budget allocation in the 2018/19 Budget of $220,000 to settle the matter.
