Jodie is leading charge

HOCKEY: The Sunshine Coast's Jodie Kenny helped Australia down Canada 4-0 at the Hawke's Bay Cup in Hastings yesterday with a crucial goal.

Kenny slotted a penalty inside the opening period to get the Hockeyroos on the front foot.

The former Coast junior is in the box seat for a call-up to Rio as the Aussies fight for Olympic gold.

"We're about trying to improve and peak at the right time in Rio and this tournament is part of that," Hockeyroos coach Adam Commens said.

"In an Olympic year that selection pressure is there and sometimes that pressure can contribute but the pressure's going to be that much more at the Olympic Games."

Kenny is in fine form and will be key to Australia's charge to a Hawke's Bay Cup victory in tomorrow's quarter final against China, Ireland or India.

"We're a team that has the ability to score a lot of goals," Commens said.

"I think the way we're playing throughout the pitch is positive.

"We're creating those chances. We just need to tidy up the end zone.

"On goal difference we finish second in our pool but that doesn't matter.

"Our players are better than what they've shown."
