Kingaroy hosts state's best young golfers

GOLF: Some of the best young golfers in Queensland have enjoyed great conditions over the last four days at the Kingaroy Golf Club during the Secondary School Golf Championships.

School students aged 10-19 from all over the state have spent four days being tested by Kingaroy's golf course.

Kingaroy High School Deputy Principal and State carnival convenor, Lloyd Fairbairn said the course held up well again the state's best young golfers.

"These kids are some of the best in the country and not one of them broke par. Lost of balls were lost, the course certainly tested them,” Mr Fairbairn said.

As tough as it was there was still a hole in one on the 14th hole from one very happy North Queensland representative.

Overall runner up in the females, Isabelle Simpson shot scores of 81, 77, 79, 72 with her impressive final round being only one shot off the female course record.

A round which included six birdies on the back nine.

Tara Jenkins from Northern Districts shot rounds of 76, 73, 80, 77 to take out the female event.

Tara is looking forward to finishing her schooling at the end of this year and making her mark on the professional circuit.

In the boys event, Sam Smith from Metropolitan West overcame a lack lustre first round of 79 to take out the Championship eight shots ahead of runner up Bailey Arnott from the Sunshine Coast with rounds of 79, 69, 72, 67.

Mr Fairbairn is proud of the Kingaroy Golf Club for hosting such a large event which has resulted in a huge spike in spending throughout the town,

"All the hotels and motels in the region have been full during the event. People like Jane Franklin, Secretary at the Golf Club have really done a great job of promoting the South Burnett,” Mr Fairbairn said.

Selectors have picked their teams to compete at the National Championships in Coffs Harbour later next month.

The Queensland team are confident of a strong showing at the Nationals after taking out the event last year.
