League legend talks safety at wind farm

ENERGY retailer, AGL invited Australian football legend, Darren Lockyer to their renewable energy site at Coopers Gap last week to address workers on the importance of safety.

GM for Power Development at AGL, Dave Johnson said safety was absolutely at the forefront of all they do at AGL.

"People do not remember if a project is on budget or not, they remember if their team had a good working experience and came home safe every night to their families,” he said.

Mr Johnson said having the rugby league star to address the team of over 200 dressed in their hi-vis uniforms was a unique way to spread the importance of safety in the workplace.

"Having someone like Darren Lockyer talk to the contractors and teams at Coopers Gap reinforces our commitment to safety and allows our message to get through to those who work for us via a different medium,” he said.

Mr Johnson said the former Broncos captain shared sporting stories and analogies about looking after your mates before doing a tour of the wind farm site.

"Darren told our teams about safety being a shared responsibility and the importance of looking out for your mates and taking care of each other,” he said.

Mr Johnson said safety can never be underestimated and AGL strives for zero harm to our people.

"We encourage all of our workers and sub-contractors to challenge the norm because we believe in creating a culture where people are supported in ensuring safety comes first,” he said.

"And changing a culture isn't easy, keeping everyone safe in every single environment we operate in takes a sustained effort.”
