Local store recognised on big stage at national awards night

THEY say a lot can happen in 12 months and the manager of a local South Burnett store can attest to that.

For the second year in a row Jason 'Wal' Koy and his team at the Kingaroy Telstra Shop were crowned as the National Store of the Year Award at a conference in Melbourne.

Along with taking out the top spot, they were nominated for the Advocacy Award and Sales Award, which they also won for the first time.

Based at the Kingaroy Shopping World, the manager said he felt extremely proud to return home with two awards.

"It's massive feat for a little town like Kingaroy to win these awards,” Wal said.

"We are very, very excited to be in this position.

With over 18-years of experience behind him, Wal said there was one core thing that gets him out of bed every day.

"I love coming to work everyday because of my people,” Wal said.

"The group of people I have here in the store are awesome.

"I also thrive off interacting with the local community.

"You won't always make everyone happy but it's something we pride ourselves on and aim to please,” he said.

After a relocation shuffle to the shopping centre earlier this year, Wal said it has made a world of difference to the daily operations of the business.

"The environment which we are in now is so much better than what we had,” Wal said.

"It feels a lot more homely and the guys enjoy coming to work because it feels a lot more functional.

Along with moving stores and receiving the accolades, Wal's year was topped off with a personal high after he proposed to his partner at the Captain's dinner.

"It was an expensive night, but totally worth it.”

"We still don't have a date yet but am looking forward to planning it all out.”
