Love of the game drives South Burnett's first U12 girls team

SOUTH Burnett's under-12 girls rugby league players have a passion for the game and are making their mark on the Toowoomba Rugby League competition.

It is the first time U12 girls from the region have had the chance to play in an all-girls team, in addition to playing in their mixed club teams.

Coach Evalyn Thompson said this season offered the girls a taste of what the future held as they played in their last eligible year of mixed football.

"When they reach U14s they go up to the 47th Battalion and this is a great introduction to that because usually the girls go in cold playing against girls, they are used to playing against boys,” Thompson said.

"It is a different game. The girls play smart, everything you teach them at training they will do out on the field and that is all you want as a coach.”

The girls will come up against Highfields on Friday for their second game of the season.

While the players are eager to get on the field, the team is struggling for numbers and are looking for more girls to boost their side.

"They have their own team to call theirs and hopefully more girls will come,” Thompson said.
