Man charged after Brisbane toilet block bomb scare

POLICE have charged a man following investigations into a suspicious item located at a toilet block at Kangaroo Point on Thursday night.

The item was discovered around 8.30pm with an emergent declaration being made under the Public Safety Preservation Act at 11pm.

The package, which had wires and batteries protruding from it, forced the closure of Captain Burke Park at Kangaroo Point, along with several adjoining streets, the ABC reported.

"Police received a call that there were two male persons running around calling out 'there is a bomb inside the toilet'," Inspector Sean Cryer said.

"The toilet revealed a suspected improvised explosive device with wires coming out of it, with batteries coming out of it.

"We are obviously treating it with the utmost caution."

Specialist police were called in to investigate the device.

The area affected was the park itself within a boundary of Holman Street to the south and the Brisbane River to the east, north and west.

Part of Holman Street was also closed with diversions in place.

Traffic travelling over the Story Bridge was not affected, nor traffic on the river.

The declaration was revoked at 12.35am after the item was declared safe.

A 28-year-old man from Deception Bay was charged with bomb hoax - place article/substance and bomb hoax - falsely state/inform bomb present.

He is expected to appear at the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Friday.

A second man was released without charge.
