Maracas shake to beat for National Simultaneous Storytime

KINGAROY students got their maracas and alpaca friends out for storytime this week as they read along with children across the country.

St John's Lutheran School Kingaroy students were some of more than one million Australian and New Zealand students who read author Matt Cosgrove's book Alpacas with Maracas at the same time this morning.

St John's library co-ordinator Tracey Tunstall said the students from Prep to Year 6 gave up their morning tea time to participate in the National Simultaneous Storytime event at 11am.

"They get the experience of kids across Australia reading the same book at the same time," Ms Tunstall said.

Students held their maracas at the ready before shaking them along with the characters as author Matt Cosgrove and children's entertainer Jimmy 'Giggle' Rees read the story on the screen with real alpacas.

"The kids love Matt Cosgrove's books, his books are awesome," Ms Tunstall said.

The teacher dressed up as an alpaca for the occasion to make the storytime even more entertaining.

"If we can do something a little different like this that can encourage a love of reading, that's what we do," Ms Tunstall said.

"And if that means dressing up like an alpaca, that's what you do."

The school library was filled with paper maracas and alpaca pictures for the event.

Ms Tunstall encouraged parents to sit and read with their children.

"Have a family storytime, sit on the lounge and take the five minutes to read at bed time," she said.

"There's nothing more fun than reading a storybook with your child."

The teacher also encouraged parents to lead by example by letting their children see their parents read.

The children at the Kingaroy Under 8's Day in the Park also participated in National Simultaneous Storytime.
