A MUSEUM dedicated to a Kingaroy born and bred cricket legend is on the cards.

Matthew Hayden's professional cricket career includes holding the record for the highest score made by an Australian batsman in tests (380) and representing the sport on an international level.

His parents, Moya and Lawrence, are right behind the idea of their son being immortalised.

Mr Hayden said valuable sporting memorabilia and gear from his son's career could be loaned to the museum.

"I'm absolutely hoping it will happen," Mr Hayden said.

"We have talked to Matthew and he is willing to loan the museum a whole lot of gear.

"We also have kept everything over the years; videos of his games, paper clippings, some of the photos throughout the place.

"It could be a tremendous tourist attraction for the region."

Councillor Barry Green said he was surprised the region had not already honoured Hayden's sporting accomplishments.

"I will be pursuing this matter as high priority," he said.

"Preliminary discussions have taken part with Matthew's management group but where they are now I'm not sure.

"I feel it not only honours one of the truly great sporting heroes produced in the South Burnett, but it will also have great tourist potential for the region."

Earlier this year Hayden was involved in a Queensland Tourism campaign aimed to attract Indian tourists in coming to Australia.
