Meet the newest cops on patrol

A DECADE ago Eva Samachis left her home on a one-year working holiday visa to practise her English.

Today, she took her first steps in policing the streets of Mackay.

Born in Transylvania, Romania, the soft-spoken 38-year-old , was one of five first-year officers who began their placements in the Mackay region today.

"I've always been attracted to law enforcement," Constable Samachis said.

"I have a passion for people."

Despite never having visited the region, Const Samachis said Mackay was her first choice for her 12-month placement.

"Here it's more involved in the community," she said.

"It's a coastal area and it not as big as Brisbane."

It was also Emma Walsh's first day following in her family's well-worn path of law enforcement.

Const Walsh, 23, said her father, aunt and uncle all served with the police but it was the influence of her father that was the "inspiration for that dream".

Const Walsh said she was excited - and nervous - to start her 12-month placement in Bowen.

Anna McMillan was 18 when she knew she wanted to become a police officer.

Now 27, Const McMillan said her time outside the force, as a manager at Hungry Jacks, had equipped her with the skills to "deal with conflict and manage people".

"I'm a little bit nervous - but I might be a bit more nervous for my first day at the station tomorrow," she said.

For the next 12 months Const Samachis and Const Michael Furst, 24, will be based in Mackay; Const Walsh will be in Bowen, Const McMillan in Sarina and Const Gabriel Moran, 22, in Moranbah.
