Mazdas in airbag recall, now affecting 700,000 cars

MAZDA Australia has announced further car and commercial vehicle recalls as the Takata airbag crisis deepens.

In three separate recalls announced, the first models affected were sold in Australia between August 22 2002 and November 19 2007:

  • Mazda6 Sedan,
  • Mazda6 wagon/hatch,
  • RX-8 coupe,
  • E-Series (SK) van,
  • T-Series (SY) cab chassis,
  • B2500 (UN) and
  • B2600 (UN) ute/cab chassis.

The second recall covers the Mazda6 sedan/hatch and wagons sold between April 28 2006 and March 30 2009, while the third covers the Mazda6 sedan/hatch and wagons on sale between July 29 2005 and November 19 2007.

Some dates overlap due to cars needing either driver or passenger airbag inflator replaced, while some require both inflators changed.

The number of Mazdas caught up in these three recalls alone is just shy of 80,000, bringing the total number of Australian cars affected by faulty Takata airbag inflators to approximately 700,000.

The problem comes from the ruptured inflator potentially releasing metallic fragments into an occupant during a crash, increasing their risk of injury.

Seven deaths have been linked to the faulty airbag inflators worldwide, but none in Australia.

A government recalls website lists all the affected VINs for these latest Mazda models, plus the numerous other manufacturers and models caught up in the saga.

Exactly when the recalls will happen is unknown as the sheer scale of cars affected globally - around 60 million - means replacement parts will need to be produced on an unprecedented scale.

Mazda Australia has said it will contact all affected customers by mail as soon as parts become available, when their preferred Mazda Dealer will replace faulty airbag inflators at no charge.
