Musicians make movie magic at community workshop and concert

THE SOUTH Burnett Community Orchestra was treated to a guided weekend workshop led by Brisbane specialist conductor Gwyn Roberts.

They finished up the weekend by holding a free concert, allowing the South Burnett musicians to show off what they had learnt.

Gwyn Roberts was the University of Queensland music director and was heavily involved in the music program for more than 20 years.

Since retiring, Mr Roberts has been visiting regional areas to host workshops and share his musical skills.

Mr Roberts said he was quite impressed with the musical talent in the South Burnett.

"I have had a most wonderful weekend," he said.

"I really do enjoy movie music. It is always a concert favourite.

"A weekend-long workshop is also most affective. I'm able to spend more time with the orchestra and it also becomes a bit of a social event."

Audience members were treated to music themes from Harry Potter, How to Train your Dragon, and Man of Steel during the Kingaroy Town Hall concert in.

Mr Roberts said he was astounded by the audience turnout.

"I do love seeing a small regional community support their local orchestra and choir," he said.

"It says a lot about that community.

"Of course so does the dedication of those who have been involved with organising this delightful weekend."

This was not Mr Robert's first time visiting the South Burnett - he ran a regional outreach program in his role as music director at the university, which brought him to the region in the past.

"I just love visiting our regional communities," he said.

"There's a lot of musical talent everywhere.

"For many years my wife and I used to travel here for the Taabinga Homestead Chambers Musical Festival, now that was a jolly good show."

Mr Roberts said he hoped the South Burnett Orchestra learnt as much from him, as he did from them.

"I have no concrete plans to return as of yet, however it will be at the front of my mind," he said.

"Of course I wish to return here to Kingaroy. If they'll have me that is."
