NEXT DEPUTY PM? Littleproud front runner for top job

OUR Warwick-based MP David Littleproud is a frontrunner to take on the role of Deputy Prime Minister.

Barnaby Joyce yesterday announced his planned resignation as Deputy Prime Minister and leader of the Nationals.

Mr Littleproud, the Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources, has been tipped as one of four parliamentarians in line for the position. Also in the mix are NSW politicians David Gillespie and Michael McCormack and Victorian Darren Chester.

Mr Littleproud has had a meteoric rise through the ranks of parliament, being elected in 2016 and becoming a Cabinet Minister two months ago.

Mr Littleproud yesterday expressed his admiration for the parliamentary work of Mr Joyce.

"Mr Joyce has always been a powerful advocate for rural, regional and remote Australia and will continue to be," he said.

Warwick resident and 50-year National Party member Penny Campbell- Wilson said if Mr Littleproud was nominated and accepted the nomination, he would have her support.

"I think he's an excellent politician and his electorate is his first priority so, if he became leader of the Nationals, he'd put his heart and soul into it," Mrs Campbell-Wilson said.

"With the experience David has had, not just as Member for Maranoa but in his business life, he would look after his electorate well as Deputy Prime Minister."

Southern Downs Mayor Tracy Dobie said it would help draw attention to the region if Mr Littleproud assumed the position.

"He's a relatively new and relatively young politician but I think he's shown everyone that he has the best interests for Maranoa at heart," Cr Dobie said.

"I look at things like the inland rail, he's advocated strongly since he was elected and that's important for our region."

Former Member for the Southern Downs Lawrence Springborg said deciding the next leader was a matter for the party room but he spoke positively about Mr Littleproud.

"David Littleproud is a very competent and capable person, we've been close friends for 20 years," Mr Springborg said.
