Orchestra one note closer to Armistice commemorations
SOUTH Burnett Community Orchestra and the Kingaroy RSL Sub-branch are working towards a shared goal; recognising our defence personnel and those who served in the war.
The orchestra is preparing for its 1918 Armistice Commemoration event on November 10, which will feature historic music from the war era and special guest speakers.
Orchestra president Jane Kennedy said it would be a big event, combining musicians, singers and people who like history.
"We'll play the kind of music they would've listened to," she said.
The group found it difficult to source the old songs, especially Australian ones, but they were also working on some original works written especially for the centenary concert.
"There's some surprises in store," Ms Kennedy said.
Musicians from places such as Brisbane, Chinchilla, Dalby, Gold Coast and Miles will travel to Kingaroy to play in the 60-piece semi-professional orchestra.
The concert is the orchestra's tribute to the past and present servicemen.
"This is not only a commemoration concert, but we'll also do fundraising for Legacy," Ms Kennedy said.
Special guest speaker Rear Admiral Brett Stephen Wolski from the Royal Navy and Kingaroy, will speak at the concert and at Kingaroy's Remembrance Day celebrations.
Kingaroy RSL Sub-branch president Don Davey said the orchestra was contributed to the Remembrance Day activities happening in November.
"The fact that it's a 100-year ceremony for the end of the year, we'll get behind it and support it while we can," he said.
The commemoration project will cost close to $30,000, with varying significant costs such as the original music venue hire, equipment hire, photo copying and conductor tuition.
"The music itself is just a percentage of this overall cost, while the music is essential and expensive, there has been other significant costs adding up to this figure," Mrs Kennedy said.
Putting together a large event can be costly, and the RSL assisted the orchestra with a $3000 donation.
The RSL often helps out community groups, and this opportunity allowed them to combine both passions.
The Armistice Centenary Commemoration Gala Charity Dinner will be held at the Kingaroy Town Hall on November 10, and doors will open from 6pm.
The tickets for the concert will be $60 each, including a three course meal and show, are currently available on www.trybooking.com, or in person from Office Central on Haly St, Kingaroy.
