ON day six of the 2019 Mackay Eisteddfod, dancers took to the stage, bringing their grace to their modern and contemporary, waltzes, classical ballet and tap routines.

But behind the scenes, in the backstage halls, dancers nervously pirouetted and pranced silently in preparation for their moment in the spotlight.

Each changing room was filled with last minute lipstick applications, puffs of powdery foundation and glittery costumes spilling off the clothing racks.

But 16-year-old Jordan Hayes said she was calm while waiting for her classical solo performance.

The veteran performer said she had been dancing since she was two, and could still remember taking to the stage in frilly pink pyjamas to dance to the song 'I want a hippopotamus for Christmas'.

The elegant dancers were joined by an orchestra of nervous young musicians, who were stepping up the challenge of the pianoforte, electronic piano, string, brass and woodwind sections of the eisteddfod competition.
