Police and elders work to calm tensions in Aurukun

SENIOR police are working closely with community leaders and elders in Aurukun to help calm tensions which have been heightened in recent days.

Preliminary information indicates that a number of large street disturbances between local families occurred yesterday on Kang Kang Road, which involved the use of projectiles, some of which were made of wood and steel.

At this time, police have no reports of injuries.

The general store was broken into with a large quantity of property stolen. Two vehicles were also stolen and a number of houses and businesses damaged, along with a car carrying police officers.

Police have arrested nine people on a number of offences including break and enter and wilful damage.

The township has been calm today however additional police are travelling to Aurukun and expected to arrive this afternoon.

Officers continue to actively work with and consult with the community to ensure a peaceful outcome to the increased tensions.

Investigations into yesterday's incidents continue.
