Raising flags and awareness for Reconciliation Week
THE South Burnett Council plans to raise awareness on Reconciliation Week by holding a special flag raising ceremony.
The ceremony will be held at 10.30am on Wednesday, May 29 at the Kingaroy Town Hall forecourt, and Mayor Keith Campbell has invited the whole community to attend.
Cr Campbell said he wanted everyone to take a moment to consider what reconciliation involved.
"Reconciliation Week runs annually from the 27th of May to the 3rd of June and is a time for us to explore how we can continue to foster respect, trust and positive relationships between the wider Australian community and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples,” he said.
The council is looking forward to this year's theme, which is 'Grounded in Truth: Walk Together with Courage'.
The theme recognises that at the heart of reconciliation is the relationship between the broader Australian community and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
It also highlights that to foster positive race relations, our relationships must be grounded in foundations of truth.
"The flag raising ceremony will signify the unity between the many cultures found in the South Burnett,” Cr Campbell said.
"Everyone is welcome to attend the flag raising ceremony as a mark of respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people during Reconciliation Week.”
Those attending will also be treated to a community morning tea following the ceremony.
