Relay team aims to break fundraising record

WITH the Kingaroy Relay For Life committee riding the coattails of an incredibly successful Captains Dinner, it's time for teams to step up to the fundraising challenge.

Relay For Life patron Carl Rackemann said over $32,000 was raised from Dinner with the Captains, with $15,933 being made from the auction.

"It's great the way the community got behind this event and we look forward to the relay in October,” he said.

"Now all the teams are busy fundraising.”

One of those teams is Ride For Relay.

Mountain bike riders from Kingaroy, Toowoomba and Brisbane will be taking part in a 350km bike ride to raise funds for Relay For Life.

The 12 team members ride for five days on back roads and rail trails throughout the South Burnett.

Team member Jason Wyeth said the team raises funds through social media, raffles and donations along the ride.

"We start at Kingaroy and go to Goomeri and stay the night in the showgrounds,” he said.

"From there we ride back to Kingaroy and stay the night at the state school, on day three we ride Kingaroy to Blackbutt and stay in the hall, day four we go to Nanango, then day five we ride from Nanango through to Booie, back to Memerambi and arrive at Kingaroy in time for the start of Relay for Life.”

Wyeth said the team were hoping to raise over $11,000.

"Last year we topped the fundraising for 2017, this is our second year doing the ride and we're hoping to increase on our almost $11,000 that we raised as a team last year.”

Wyeth said this was a cause that was very close to his heart.

"When my son was three he had a brain tumour.

"We spent nine or 10 months in hospital with him, and he's now 16-years-old,” Wyeth said.

"My wife is the secretary of the Relay For Life committee and I'm the secretary of the Mountain Bike Association.

"This is my chance to marry the two, my love of riding, and raising money to kick cancer in the guts.”
