THE South Burnett region is synonymous with sports of all kinds, so it was no surprise that the South Burnett Times People's Choice Awards for best sporting club was a hotly contested affair.

The region's only Australian Rules Football club, South Burnett Saints proudly took out the runners-up flag.

President of the club, Andrew Foley, said they worked hard on being a really inclusive club.

"We have something for everyone from 6 to 65," he said.

Being the only Aussie rules club in the region means a lot of travel across the Darling Downs, as far as Goondiwindi.

"We do a fair share more travel than in other sports," Foley said.

While the club is pretty competitive at home, they struggle in away games.

"Our track record on the road is something we need to improve on," Foley said.

"I remember some of my best times in sport were on the road with my mates, it was fantastic.

"We need to get the players to really enjoy their away games."

One of the biggest challenges the club has in retaining players is the gap between the junior ranks to the seniors.

At present the Saints has under-8s and under-10s teams, but then there's a big gap until the seniors competition.

This makes transitioning into the senior competition impossible.

"We are trying to start an under-16s team," Foley said.

Nanango's La Creme Dance Academy was the only sporting club to feature in the top ten that wasn't involved in a ball game.

One of the directors, Bec Stone, first came on board when the club started to see significant growth.

"It started getting out of control," she said.

The long-term Nanango dancer said the club had more than 250 students and they had some exciting things in the pipeline.

"We are heading to USA next year for a dance tour. We will perform at Disneyland," she said.

As a dance coach, Stone focused her teaching on the passionate and fun parts of the sport.

"I try to instil a love of dance in them," she said.
