Rising star of hip-hop comes to Coolangatta

DYLAN Joel has been making a mark on the airwaves with his new music.

Last Friday, Melbourne's rising star of hip-hop released his debut album, Authentic Lemonade.

Next week, he'll take to the stage at Boardriders Club in Coolangatta.

Joel recently supported hip-hop sensation Seth Sentry on his mammoth national tour, which ran from June to September.

He said Coolangatta was a "phenomenal" place to perform alongside his mate Sentry.

"That was an awesome show," Joel said.

"It was one of my favourite shows on the tour."

Joel said he admired Sentry, who was able to appeal to a wider audience than the "hardcore hip-hop" fans.

He said that was something he was striving to do in his music too.

Joel said he was "super excited" to head out on his own promotional tour this month.

When he spoke to the Tweed Daily News, he was just one day away from releasing Authentic Lemonade.

After two years' work on the album, Joel said he'd been keenly awaiting its release and the opportunity to hear his fans' thoughts.

"I'm looking forward to being able to hold a physical copy in my hands," he said.

"It was my debut album so I wanted to make sure everything was the way I wanted it to be."

Joel's singles have already had a big warm welcome from the industry and he's hoping the LP follows suit.

"They've all had radio play and radio premieres as well," he said.

"People are really digging it and liking the songs."

Joel took on co-production duties for the whole album, alongside ARIA award-winning producer Cam Bluff, but he's always played a big role in every step of his music-making.

"I wrote the majority of the core parts in my bedroom," he joked.

"Up until this record, I always produced my own stuff anyway.

"There was nothing Cam did without me there."

His single, Blank, shows a new side to Joel's talents.

"It's the first real taste of me singing my own hooks," he said.

Alongside Blank, the album features party jam Swing featuring Mantra and DJ Izm and feel-good single What's Good, which Joel used to launch his Pop-Up Op-Shop campaign earlier this year.

The campaign raised more than $10,000 for the Australian Himalayan Foundation.
