Rodeo champ bound for US

THE colours of Biggenden State School will be flying high in South Dakota when Year 7 student Emi Carlson competes in the rodeo ring.

Emi booked her flight to America when she was named the junior all round champion at the Australian high school rodeo finals in Murrurundi, NSW.

Her mum, Kerrie, said they are very proud of her achievements, as any family would be.

"Emi is a great competitor but overall I didn't think that she would come home with what she did," she said.

"She is a great rider and competes well but there were girls from all over Australia there."

She rode at the championships in April but her school has recently found out about her feats which Mrs Carlson said is typical of Emmi who lets her achievements speak for themselves.

Emi competed in barrel racing, pole bending, breakaway roping, ribbon roping and goat tying and came away with a horse saddle for winning high point cowgirl and a buckle each for winning junior rookie of the year and all round junior champion.

She is no stranger to competing in America having been three times before and Mrs Carlson was it was always a great experience with high quality competition.

"We enjoy going over because the people are wonderful, kind and good fun," she said.

While Emi will be at a disadvantage having to compete on difference horses but Mrs Carlson said as a rider who loves and breathes the sport was up for the challenge.

"It is an awesome opportunity an wonderful experience and she will do it," she said.

Emi will compete from June 23-30.
