Search for Snow White to star opposite Szubanski, Sandilands

PRODUCER Bonnie Lythgoe is in Brisbane this weekend looking for Australia's next young star of the stage.

The TV personality, who used to be a judge on So You Think You Can Dance Australia, is holding auditions for the lead role in her Snow White pantomime in Brisbane this weekend.

The new production, debuting in Sydney in July, follows Lythgoe's successful introduction of traditional UK pantomimes to American audiences.

The show already boasts a big-name cast including Sir Cliff Richard as the Mirror Enchanted, Magda Szubanski in her first panto role as the Wicked Queen and Jimmy Rees as Muddles.

Radio shock jock Kyle Sandilands is also making his theatrical debut as Richard's alter ego, the Mirror Disgruntled.

"I'm always a person who wants a challenge and I feel Kyle will be a fabulous challenge," Lythgoe told APN.

"I didn't even think he'd say yes. He's different, he's unusual and we all love to hate him. He's the kind of panto character I want."

When it comes to her Snow White, Lythgoe is looking for fresh-faced talent.

"What I'm looking for is somebody who can sing really well and who is confident with their personality," she said.

"They've got to be that beautiful, lovable Snow White that all the children absolutely adore. She's got to be warm, friendly and part of the audience if you know what I mean."

Finalists will be called to Sydney where Lythgoe will make her final decision and also cast the child actors who will play the dwarfs.

She hopes some of the final dancers from the current season of So You Think You Can Dance Australia will also join the show.

"I love the show and even though I can't be part of it this year because of Snow White, I still want them to be part of the show," she said.

Cameras will also document the entire audition and rehearsal process for a TV special currently in development with Channel 9.

"I did a TV series in the United States called Opening Night, which was all about behind the scenes and the rehearsals through to opening night. I want to do the same thing here," she said.

"David Campbell is a very good friend and his wife is one of our producers as well, so I hope to be able to reveal our Snow White with Mornings."

If Sydney theatre-goers embrace Lythgoe's panto, which uses modern pop songs by artists like Katy Perry, then she plans to bring the show to other capital cities next year.

"We have a brilliant cast but we still have to dip our toes in the water," she said.

"If we can get it right we'll bring Snow White to Brisbane and Melbourne and bring (our panto) Aladdin from LA."

Auditions for Snow White: The Family Musical will be held at Westfield Chermside tomorrow and Sunday.

Registration opens at 8am and auditions are open to girls aged 16 to 26. For more information go to Lythoe's website.

The show will play Sydney's State Theatre from July 4 to 13.
