Severe storm warning issued for south-east Queensland

A SEVERE thunderstorm warning has been issued for Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Logan, Gympie, Ipswich, and other areas.

The warning also covers the Cherbourg Shire, South Burnett, Redland City and North Stradbroke Island council areas.

"The Bureau of Meteorology warns that, at 4:15 pm, severe thunderstorms were detected on weather radar near Coomera,'' the warning said.

"These thunderstorms are moving towards the east. They are forecast to affect Beenleigh, Logan City and Cherbourg by 4:45 pm and the ranges between Gympie and Murgon, Russell Island and the area east of Murgon by 5:15 pm.

Damaging winds are likely.

The stormy afternoon will herald the start of a cold weekend, with temperatures expected to plunge to seven degrees on Sunday morning.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Sam Campbell said dry winds from Antartica would generate the weekend wintery blast.

"That air is coming from Antarctica and it's quite dry,"  he told Fairfax.

"It's an early blast of winter conditions."

Emergency Management Queensland advises that people should:

* Move your car under cover or away from trees.
* Secure loose outdoor items.
* Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees.
* Avoid using the telephone during a thunderstorm.
* Beware of fallen trees and powerlines.
* For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132 500.

The next warning is due to be issued by 5:15 pm.

A more general severe thunderstorm warning is also current for the Wide Bay and Burnett, Southeast Coast and parts of the Capricornia districts.
