REVEALED: 50+ abandoned Mackay vehicles in need of owners

SAVVY shoppers can pick up a car for as little as $1 tomorrow at the council's abandoned cars auction.

But buyers have been warned that surprises may lurk under the hood.

Dozens of people picked through the ruins of once great cars at the Mackay Regional Council Ness St depot in search of something that was at least salvageable.

With surgical precision they poked through cars with missing engines, weeds growing through the gears and smashed windows.

North Mackay resident Shaun Dooley, 29, said he bought his car at a council auction last year for just $90.

The white 2003 Holden Astra took a month, and $600 worth of repairs and registration fees, to get it road worthy again, Mr Dooley said.

But after a year on the road, he said his car needed a tune- up. This year Mr Dooley had his eye on two Holden Astras going under the hammer at tomorrow's auction. The wrecks would be stripped down for parts to keep his original car rolling for another two or three years, he said.

Other potential buyers inspecting the 55 abandoned vehicles were not as enthusiastic about their prospects.

But North Mackay resident Robert Cholava described a Blue Honda Accord Sedan he inspected as in "reasonable" shape. "Here you're lucky if you get reasonable," Mr Cholava joked.

Council local laws officer Rod McBride said some cars looked like they were reasonable but "you don't know what's wrong underneath".

"Some are lucky enough to find a set of keys and drive onto the back of a truck - but it's not many," he said.

Mr McBride pointed to a boat, which was abandoned in Bucasia, and said, "You'll only get it for $5 - but go out to sea and see how far you get."
