Songwriting collaboration all via email

DEAN Perrett has four songs nominated in four different sections in the upcoming Tamworth Songwriters' Salute Awards of Australia in January, however his method of songwriting is a story on its own.

The song, written in collaboration with Troy Cassar-Daley, My Country My Land, is up for the coveted Country Ballad of the Year award, and was written entirely over email.

"We bounced emails back and forward to each other until we were happy with it," Perrett said.

Although this is Perrett's first time collaborating with Cassar-Daley, he said it was not the first time he worked with someone else.

"My sister Kerri Mooney used to sing with me," Perrett said.

"We started off as a brother-sister duet."

Perrett said his sister now focusded on her family, but he had his "fingers crossed one day she'll come back to join me".

"Our parents used to take us to different country music festivals where he first started to develop stage craft and interest in the country music scene," he said.

"My dad Glen can't sing, but writes some really good poetry, and my grandfather used to have a very nice baritone voice when he was young."

Between his father's poetry writing, and his grandfather's vocals, it is no secret where Perrett got his talent from.

Perrett said he was particularly excited about singing his song My Country My Land at next month's Tamworth Songwriters Salute Awards of Australia.

My Country My Land, "is a song about all Australians from all cultures working together and looking towards the future".

"We wanted to create a song that showed both our heritages, where we came from," he said.

The song incorporates aspects of Cassar-Daley's indigenous background, and is written from Perrett's perspective as a fourth- generation cattleman.

"It's about growing up on the land and wanting to be like my dad," he said.

Perrett's songs will be showcased at the Songwriters' Salute Awards of Australia from January 16 to 25 in 2015.
