South Burnett schoolkids get a kick out of NRL Literacy Tour
A TOUR of South Burnett schools could provide the spark that ignites footy fever in our youngsters, and fosters the next generation of Queensland Maroons stars.
South Burnett students welcomed special guests to their story time sessions this week in the build-up to this weekend's QRL Country Week round.
South and Central NRL game development officer Blake Mara and Kingaroy Police Constable Jemma Knight travelled to the schools to promote rugby league and literacy as part of an NRL Literacy Tour.
Mr Mara treated the students to a reading of Blue and Red's New Game: Rugby League.
The children's book was commissioned by the NRL and helps educate kids about the game by outlining rules and tactics involved in the sport.
Mr Mara said instead of going into schools and kicking the footy around with the kids, he thought he would mix up his schedule.
"I usually come into schools before Country Week to promote the NRL,” Mr Mara said.
"This time I thought it would be a great idea to incorporate the reading element into the tour.
"Although, ultimately, kids do love to play footy.”
After the footy-themed story time, Mr Mara and Const Knight gave out posters of the Queensland State of Origin team and then headed down to the oval to test their skills.
Cnst Knight said she enjoyed the tour of the region's schools.
"It's really good for police officers to come out to schools for these types of events to try to build a relationship with the kids,” she said.
"I'm also the Adopt-a-Cop for Tabbinga State School, which is a great program to engage with the schoolchildren and further develop those partnerships.”
The Literary Tour took Mr Mara and Cnst Knight to Kingaroy State School, Murgon State School, Cherbourg State School, Moffatdale State School, Wondai State School, Taabinga State School, St John's Lutheran School, Nanango State School, Yarraman State School and St Patrick's in Nanango.
The Q Cup Country Week round will be televised from the Nanango Stags home ground this Sunday, July 21, with kick-off scheduled for 1.10pm.
