Sport clubs encouraged to apply for funding
LOCAL sporting groups are being encouraged to apply for their share of $28.9million of funding.
The Sport Participation Grants program 'Move It Aus' is designed to support programs that will increase physical activity levels within local communities with the aspiration to make Australia the world's most active nation.
The Federal Member for Flynn, Ken O'Dowd is calling on sport and physical activity providers in the region to apply for funding.
Mr O'Dowd urged sporting groups and local government organisations to create or enhance programs that would help attract people across a wide range of age, ability and location to participate in physical activity and sport.
"We know just how important sport and physical activity is to helping both children and adults lead a happy, healthy life,” Ken O'Dowd said.
"Our goal is to get more Australians more active more often.
"I encourage eligible organisations to consider impactful ways to innovate with new programs, or enhance existing physical activity initiatives that will improve the lives of all Aussies across Flynn. We need help get adults to 'Find their 30' minutes of exercise a day, and children to reach the 60 minutes per day recommended by the Department of Health.”
Funding will be considered for programs that engage people who are 3-17 year-olds, from rural and remote communities, have a disability, from culturally and linguistically diverse communities, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders or with low socio-economic status.
The selection criteria also looks at the ability of programs to break down common barriers to participation such as cost, time, access and delivery method.
The program will be managed by Sport Australia, the Australian Government's leading agency for sport and physical activity.
Applications for the Sports Participation Grants Program close on February 18, 2019.
