Stags coach confident of going back-to-back
PREMIERSHIP winning coach, Matthew Heit is confident his Nanango Stags can add another trophy to the cabinet this year.
Heit praised last year's team on a stellar season.
"It helps when you have a pretty good side, they all had the right attitude,” he said.
The Stags were the team to beat last year and Heit knows the other teams will be breathing done their necks once again.
"We'll have to do more this season,” he said.
"We'll do a lot of the same things, but just do them better.”
Heit confirmed they had lost some players from last year's premiership winning side, but he was confident all players were on the same page, ready to win the comp once again.
"We've lost Joel Smallwood (retired) and Harley Farrar who moved to Oakey,” he said.
"But if we can retain 90 per cent of the players, we are confident we can go back-to-back.”
The Stags start pre-season training this week and Heit was interested to see how the players would fair after the festive break.
"A lot of them are playing cricket, so that at least keeps them active,” he said.
"We'll be getting right into our fitness.
"We try to incorporate our ball work into the fitness training.”
The Stags will play a number of trial games leading up to the start of the regular season.
"The trials give everyone a chance to have a run around and we get to see where the new players are going to fit in,” Heit said.
"We will try players in different positions to see how they go.”
Heit said it was too early to say which of the other teams he would be keeping a close eye on this season.
"I expect them all to do well,” he said.
"Whoever wants to be committed and play the best will win.”
Nanango Stags Senior Rugby League training is every Tuesday and Thursday from 6.30pm at the Stags home ground.
